Family Fun & Adventures in Oaxaca!

Family time has finally begun in Oaxaca, Mexico! We’ve been eagerly counting down the days until my son Kyle and his girlfriend Sunny could join us. As a mother, there’s nothing quite as heartwarming as cherishing quality time with her son. I’ve been looking forward to this ever since Kyle mentioned their interest in sharing part of their vacation with us.

Happy Airport Reunion – Mexico City, Mexico

Upon our arrival at the Mexico City airport, Rick had a sudden realization that the “kids” might also be there. They had already spent a week in Mexico City, enjoying themselves and having some exciting adventures. I must confess, I felt a tinge of envy at their energy levels – oh, to be in my 30s again! After a quick text exchange, we confirmed that, yes, they were indeed at the airport, heading for their gate. Rick and I made a 180-degree turn. We sprinted through the airport and met up with them just as they were boarding. Quick hugs were exchanged, and they boarded their plane to our hotel in Oaxaca, Mexico. –

The place we chose to stay was a delightful hotel near the historic town of the old city of Oaxaca. The hotel offered a delicious breakfast that became a daily indulgence for us. We had the option of an American-style or Mexican-style breakfast, and both were definite hits.

Being with Kyle and Sunny was a sheer delight. I was still getting acquainted with Sunny, and she proved to be a sweet girl. It became evident that she was an absolutely charming person, radiating warmth and kindness.

On our first day, after our respective long journeys to get there, we simply relaxed on the veranda, catching up on all the news. The kids had their own adventures in Mexico City, and we spent time planning our shared activities for the week. As I suspected, the week flew by all too quickly.

Oaxaca, a vibrant and culturally rich state in southern Mexico, is steeped in history and ancient wonders.

This region is a tapestry of indigenous traditions, colorful markets, and delicious cuisine, famous for its mole sauces, textiles, and mezcal production.

Oaxaca City, the state’s capital, boasts colonial architecture and a bustling arts scene. Beyond the city, the dramatic landscapes of Oaxaca include lush mountains, rugged coastlines,

and ancient archaeological sites like Monte Albán, a remarkable city dating back to 500 BC that once served as the capital of the Zapotec civilization.

Additionally, the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua are a captivating natural phenomenon, resembling frozen cascades of mineral-rich water.

The intricate Zapotec architecture of Mitla, both with ancient origins, add to Oaxaca’s allure. These historical and archaeological treasures make Oaxaca a fascinating destination for travelers seeking a glimpse into Mexico’s ancient past. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit all these places.

One thing I couldn’t help but notice about the cultures south of the United States is the love for bright, vibrant colors that adorn their cities. It creates a fascinating spectacle as you stroll through the towns. The colors are lively and vivid, though some of the images can be a tad… shall I say, eerie? Imagine walking through towns perpetually decked out for Halloween but in technicolor.

As you wander the streets, it’s amusing to peer into the shops and admire their neatly arranged wares. Some of the stores are so aromatic with their seasonings that you can’t resist taking a deep breath, which inevitably leads to a sneeze!

Exploring the diverse range of dishes was a culinary adventure in itself. In Mexico, the flavors are intense, and you can spice things up to your heart’s content.

Kyle and Sunny made these beautiful dishes at a Oaxacan cooking class!

It was a real treat for me since Mexican cuisine happens to be one of my favorites. What makes Mexico particularly intriguing is that different regions boast distinct food styles, making each culinary experience truly impressive.

Oaxaca proved to be an enchanting city that left us with lasting memories.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warm embrace of the sun, which seemed to illuminate every corner of this charming place. Its golden rays infused our days with a sense of vitality and adventure.

What truly made Oaxaca special was its rich and diverse culture of both ancient traditions and contemporary life. We found ourselves immersed in a world where the past and the present coexisted harmoniously.

The city’s ancient heritage was a captivating journey through time. Exploring the archaeological wonders of Monte Albán and the intricate designs of Mitla’s ruins & the Petrified waterfalls gave us an appreciation for the region’s historical roots. We marveled at the ruins, each stone telling a story of the civilizations that had once thrived here.

However, it wasn’t just the historic past that intrigued us. Oaxaca’s vibrant contemporary culture was equally compelling. The bustling markets offered a sensory overload of colors, flavors, and aromas. The lively art scene and the spirited festivals were a testament to the city’s creative spirit.

As we strolled through the streets, we encountered friendly locals who were proud to share their traditions and stories.

It was in these interactions that we truly felt the heartbeat of Oaxaca, a place where the old and the new seamlessly blended into vibrant experiences

In the end, Oaxaca was more than just a city; it was a captivating journey through time and culture, a place where the sun’s warmth and the people’s hospitality made us feel right at home. It’s a destination we’ll always treasure, filled with family memories of discovery and delight.

And best of all – we were privileged to spend it with Kyle & Sunny!
